In January 2021 I was invited by Pharmaceutical Audio to play some records in a small retail popup shop w/ Illusory Interiors. It was the fist time out and about after lockdown and was great to socialise with people and share some music. I went for a different vibe to what I usually play and listening back I think it turned out nicely. Here is the recording and tracklist bar one that I can't work out atm but will add later on. Enjoy! Decided to record some mixes with some good vibes while in lockdown starting with this selection of 45's.
Ended up a bit of an 70's and 80's vibe. Includes some dub mixes, 80's boogie and lost electronic oddities. The edit/ remix by Paris Pompor is a highlight for sure. Let me know if you are digging it.

A follow up to the
previous long player Dunklewissenschaft which was released one year prior which was a subtle nod to his Electro inspirations. The new release is more of an abstract inspiration drawn from Karl Marx, the German philosopher's economic and political theory. After hearing about these concepts we decided to find out more about the release and process behind it below. Hi Johan, thanks for taking the time to chat. The Electro Manifesto is a great release which includes a solid and varied collection of 25 tracks. I was interested to ask you about your production process. Do you go into the studio with a clear idea beforehand? It’s pretty rare that I ever start a studio session with a stated goal in mind. My approach has always been to allow my creativity to drive the experience. Most of the time my brain naturally gravitates toward downtempo Electro but other times I might end up with Italo Disco, EBM or even Synthpop. I also produce music with my girlfriend under the name ‘Gated Reverb’ so the process will vary based on the variables of the session. Sometimes I might have something (a basic idea) sketched out on an iPad app that I’ll then move into the hardware realm but that doesn’t happen too often. Mostly I just let my instincts take the wheel. Are you using the same instruments through the E.P.? Or do you change it up with each track? For this album, the tracks were produced from the second half of 2020 up until late April of 2021. During that time I used a variety of instruments in the songs due to the fact that I was selling old gear and upgrading into new gear. This album features all of the following: Hydrasynth, SE-02, SH-01, TB-03, Minilogue, System 8, Juno 106, Juno 60, System 100, SH-2, JX-3P, Jupiter 8, Novation Peak, MicroKorg and a bunch of iPad apps to emulate the sounds of MonoPoly, Polysix, Minimoog, OB8, Arp Odyssey, MS-20 and others. It is very rare that I work solely in the DAW world though three of the tracks (Externalities, Red Scare and Alienation) on this 25-track release were produced only using an iPad within Korg Gadget. The title of the release “The Electro Manifesto” is interesting. Does it have a specific meaning behind it? The entire theme behind the album is based on the philosophy of Karl Marx. The album title is a direct take on ‘The Communist Manifesto’, which is one of his most famous (and shortest) writings from 1848. I have long been a leftist and was very inspired by the political and economic thinking of folks like Fredrich Engels, Richard Wolff, Angela Davis, Upton Sinclair, Bernie Sanders and of course Marx himself. All the song titles reference some idea that is tied to socialist critiques of capitalism. Some are concepts that I find to be abhorrent (tracks like Red Scare, Class Traitor, Wage Slavery) and even some track titles that may cause people to use Google to in order to understand the meaning (tracks like Historical Materialism, Commodity Fetishization, Division Of Labor). The idea was to shine light on what seems to be a turbulent time for global capitalism. During the pandemic, the failings of capitalism were laid out in front of the masses in a way that was clear for anyone to understand. That and the rise of far-right movements around the world motivated me to theme the album in the way that I did. I felt as though there wouldn’t be a better time to pay tribute to those thinkers than now. The album cover is also an adaptation of the original cover for the first publishing of Marx and Engels’ ‘The Communist Manifesto’. Forty Five day started towards the end of 2019 as a way to celebrate the humble 7 inch single. The outcome of that was 45 individual submissions from DJ's that are enthusiastic about playing the format which went live on the 4th May 2020 which you can still check out here. For the upcoming 2021 celebration (along with an all day twitch live stream) more than 100 mixes have been submitted. Musically encompassing a broad range like 80’s soul, afrobeat, big band, boogie, boom bap, brass band, Brazilian/bossa nova, breakbeats, cinematic, covers, dance, downtempo, dub, electro, funk, hip hop, house, Irish, italo disco, jazz, jump blues, latin, mod, nu wave, punk rock, rare groove, rave, re-edits, reggae, rock and roll, samba, soul and much more. I decided to reach out to Criztoz from the Original 45ers who is behind the event concept. I like the idea because the format lends itself to quick mixing and having to be very selective about which tracks to include in your set. Especially when you only have 45 minutes to showcase your musical tastes and style. This makes DJing with 45s so much fun and this definitely comes across in all of the mixes. You can read more about his thoughts behind the 45 day concept in the interview below. Just thought I'd also mention that I also have a appreciation for the 45 it's not something that I play out too often but have been collecting them for some time too so I also submitted a mix for 45 day with a new alias DR.Ox or (Doctor Ox) which you can check out via mixcloud. What sparked your interest in the 7 inch single? and the idea behind celebrating 45 day.
I have bought and collected music for many years on all formats and became a DJ quite a few years ago starting with Vinyl and CDs and then moving onto digital DJing using Traktor DVS with the Jellyfunk Allstars. My Co-DJ Adrian (Big404) suggested a few years ago that we do a night playing just 45s. We had so much fun packing a bag of 45s and only playing what we had with us instead of scrolling through digital crates. Soon after we became the Original 45ers playing just 45s at bars, cafes, galleries and festivals including Glastonbury 2019. Since then I got involved with the Forty Five Kings group and met up with lots of other 45s DJ's. I have been involved in taking part and DJ'ing at some Record Store Day events and I came up with the idea in late 2019 that it would be fun to dedicate a day to the humble 7 inch vinyl. No one else seemed to be doing it so i decided to go for it and settled for the date 04 May as it would read 4.5.2020/2021 etc. It was originally intended to be a few live events around the world happening on the day itself but Covid stepped in and stopped those plans so it went online and I asked DJ's to put together a 45 minute audio mix using just 45s. It started small and has already grown and is now in its second year. Last year was just about the audio mixes. This time around I am also running an all day twitch live stream with DJ's from around the world playing just 45s. Hopefully next year when we are able to there will also be live events happening on the day itself around the world. What are you listening to right now? I am currently going through and listening to all of the mixes submitted for 45 day. At the time of writing I am up to 59 mixes submitted and i have listened to about half of them so far. In addition I'm listening to 45s from my collection preparing for my live streams on my twitch channel and also on the Forty Five Kings channel. Who or what is inspiring you musically and otherwise? All of the DJ's who have submitted mixes for 45 Day and also all of the DJ's i watch on Twitch live streams. I have been introduced to so much amazing new music and styles as a result of 45 Day and Twitch that it has been truly inspiring and has impacted on the music I play during my sets. For example I did not previously know what Freakbeat, Ye-Ye, or French Canadian music styles were. I do now due to listening to DJ sets. They are great and I will be adding 45s from these styles to my collection soon. Listening to all these mixes and streams constantly also inspires me to dig deeper for 45s. I am also inspired by how much love DJ's have for the 7" vinyl and this pushes me to do as much as i can to promote the format further. Anything else you would like to share? Thank you for inviting me to do this interview and for submitting a great mix yourself. I just wanted to add a couple of things. Firstly I have been really impressed with the community that has grown around 45s. Everyone is super friendly, happy to help others out with tips, advice and details on the 45s they are playing. In addition everyone wants others to succeed in this new world we find ourselves in. Secondly I also want to mention my talk show called "Part of my Journey". Each episode I speak to 2 guests about mental health, disability, hidden disabilities, DJ'ing, streaming, online communities and more. All of my guests have been amazingly open in talking about their lives and experiences. I feel these are very important topics as we have all been through so much over the last year or so and mental health is as important as physical health. Had a great time playing at Vitalise. It was great to dust off the cobwebs and play a live hardware set for the first time i a long time and the first time socialising with dancing permitted for a long time also. Well worth checking out the other events coming up if you are in Sydney.
Expect modular synthesisers with masses of blinking lights and tangled patch cables, performers playing obscure objects like panes of glass or hurdygurdies, drums played without sticks, eye bending visuals, DNA being turned into music, drones, dubs, noise, sub-bass, cut up vocals and beats alike. Improvisation, collaboration, sonic exploration. Genres being blurred, bent and re-invented before your ears.
Thanks to Hamish from the Natural High Radio Show on Orbital Radio for the invite to put together a mix for the show. This one clocks in just under two hours with a great mix of old and new fav's. Enjoy!

Was excited when asked to put together this mix for Serotonin Records. Something a little bit different with excellent visuals put together by VJ Flik. Keep an eye out for the premiere of the mix on the Serotonin Records twitch channel.
Here is what they had to say about the mix: "Drox contribution to the Neurotransmitters series is a wild ride through all the schools" You can check out the mix with visuals on youtube below or just audio via soundcloud.
The lovely people from the SHED: crew asked me recently to put together a mix for their new mix series.
I generally gravitate towards more broken beats and textures but decided to change it up a bit with this mix. Still has those vibes but with a bit of a twist. I hope you enjoy it. Includes some great new tracks from Tim Jackiw, Martin Mueller & w1b0 along with some old favourites as well. Here is what they had to say about the mix: "Big upzzz to Drox for jumping on the mix. A mainstay of Sydney's Techno + Electro Scene for many many years, Drox has carved out an imposing yet super humble etching on our local scene. Drox and the Analog Cabin ethos are an inspiration to us here in the SHED: A truly bright, guiding light brings some blistering heat to the series, we hope you NJOI xxx"
