45 Day 2021 - May the 45 be with you!

4/28/2021

Forty Five day started towards the end of 2019 as a way to celebrate the humble 7 inch single. The outcome of that was 45 individual submissions from DJ's that are enthusiastic about playing the format which went live on the 4th May 2020 which you can still check out here.

For the upcoming 2021 celebration (along with an all day twitch live stream) more than 100 mixes have been submitted. Musically
encompassing a broad range like 80’s soul, afrobeat, big band, boogie, boom bap, brass band, Brazilian/bossa nova, breakbeats, cinematic, covers, dance, downtempo, dub, electro, funk, hip hop, house, Irish, italo disco, jazz, jump blues, latin, mod, nu wave, punk rock, rare groove, rave, re-edits, reggae, rock and roll, samba, soul and much more.

I decided to reach out to Criztoz from the Original 45ers who is behind the event concept. I like the idea because the format lends itself to quick mixing and having to be very selective about which tracks to include in your set.

Especially when you only have 45 minutes to showcase your musical tastes and style. This makes DJing with 45s so much fun and this definitely comes across in all of the mixes. You can read more about his thoughts behind the 45 day concept in the interview below.

Just thought I'd also mention that
I also have a appreciation for the 45 it's not something that I play out too often but have been collecting them for some time too so I also submitted a mix for 45 day  with a new alias DR.Ox or (Doctor Ox) which you can check out via mixcloud.

What sparked your interest in the 7 inch single? and the idea behind celebrating 45 day.
I have bought and collected music for many years on all formats and became a DJ quite a few years ago starting with Vinyl and CDs and then moving onto digital DJing using Traktor DVS with the Jellyfunk Allstars. My Co-DJ Adrian (Big404) suggested a few years ago that we do a night playing just 45s. We had so much fun packing a bag of 45s and only playing what we had with us instead of scrolling through digital crates.

Soon after we became the Original 45ers playing just 45s at bars, cafes, galleries and festivals including Glastonbury 2019. Since then I got involved with the Forty Five Kings group and met up with lots of other 45s DJ's.

I have been involved in taking part and DJ'ing at some Record Store Day events and I came up with the idea in late 2019 that it would be fun to dedicate a day to the humble 7 inch vinyl. No one else seemed to be doing it so i decided to go for it and settled for the date 04 May as it would read 4.5.2020/2021 etc. It was originally intended to be a few live events around the world happening on the day itself but Covid stepped in and stopped those plans so it went online and I asked DJ's to put together a 45 minute audio mix using just 45s.

It started small and has already grown and is now in its second year. Last year was just about the audio mixes. This time around I am also running an all day twitch live stream with DJ's from around the world playing just 45s. Hopefully next year when we are able to there will also be live events happening on the day itself around the world.

What are you listening to right now?
I am currently going through and listening to all of the mixes submitted for 45 day. At the time of writing I am up to 59 mixes submitted and i have listened to about half of them so far. In addition I'm listening to 45s from my collection preparing for my live streams on my twitch channel and also on the Forty Five Kings channel.

Who or what is inspiring you musically and otherwise?
All of the DJ's who have submitted mixes for 45 Day and also all of the DJ's i watch on Twitch live streams. I have been introduced to so much amazing new music and styles as a result of 45 Day and Twitch that it has been truly inspiring and has impacted on the music I play during my sets.

For example I did not previously know what Freakbeat, Ye-Ye, or French Canadian music styles were. I do now due to listening to DJ sets. They are great and I will be adding 45s from these styles to my collection soon. Listening to all these mixes and streams constantly also inspires me to dig deeper for 45s. I am also inspired by how much love DJ's have for the 7" vinyl and this pushes me to do as much as i can to promote the format further.

Anything else you would like to share?
Thank you for inviting me to do this interview and for submitting a great mix yourself. I just wanted to add a couple of things. Firstly I have been really impressed with the community that has grown around 45s.

Everyone is super friendly, happy to help others out with tips, advice and details on the 45s they are playing. In addition everyone wants others to succeed in this new world we find ourselves in. Secondly I also want to mention my talk show called "Part of my Journey". Each episode I speak to 2 guests about mental health, disability, hidden disabilities, DJ'ing, streaming, online communities and more. All of my guests have been amazingly open in talking about their lives and experiences. I feel these are very important topics as we have all been through so much over the last year or so and mental health is as important as physical health.

Had a great time playing at Vitalise. It was great to dust off the cobwebs and play a live hardware set for the first time i a long time and the first time socialising with dancing permitted for a long time also. Well worth checking out the other events coming up if you are in Sydney.

Expect modular synthesisers with masses of blinking lights and tangled patch cables, performers playing obscure objects like panes of glass or hurdygurdies, drums played without sticks, eye bending visuals, DNA being turned into music, drones, dubs, noise, sub-bass, cut up vocals and beats alike. Improvisation, collaboration, sonic exploration. Genres being blurred, bent and re-invented before your ears.

The lovely people from the SHED: crew asked me recently to put together a mix for their new mix series.
I generally gravitate towards more broken beats and textures but decided to change it up a bit with this mix. Still has those vibes but with a bit of a twist. I hope you enjoy it. Includes some great new tracks from Tim Jackiw, Martin Mueller & w1b0 along with some old favourites as well.

Here is what they had to say about the mix: "Big upzzz to Drox for jumping on the mix. A mainstay of Sydney's Techno + Electro Scene for many many years, Drox has carved out an imposing yet super humble etching on our local scene.

Drox and the Analog Cabin ethos are an inspiration to us here in the SHED: A truly bright, guiding light brings some blistering heat to the series, we hope you NJOI xxx"

Interview
Hi Simon, Thanks for taking the time to chat. What a great E.P. Great to have you represented on the label.

Hi, Thank you! I’m super excited to have the opportunity to release music with Analog Cabin. And I love supporting local labels so it’s great to be repping with a Sydney crew.

I know a lot of Analog Cabin fans are particularly interested in the production process so let’s talk shop for a bit.

The first thing that jumps out at me in Cathartic Rhythmia is the solid kick drum playing against the rhythmic side stick pattern. The constant tick tock of this rhythm is contrasted by sparser elements such as rich gongs and swelling pads. Talk us through your approach to this track, was there an inspiration behind it?

I guess with Cathartic Rhythmia I wanted to break up the 4/4 pattern a bit and play with polyrhythms. The side stick you mention is the MFB Kraftzwerg being CV sequenced by the Analog 4’s arpeggio. From what I recall I used a weird timing on a few instruments so the percussion moves around over the length of the track. The overall vibe I was going for started with the pads, which are the Minilogue, which I played live. I wanted the laid back ambient sounds juxtaposed against a heavy but organic beat to get a sort of spacey new age feel. I find a lot of inspiration in the space and ambience of this track.

The title track Four Directions is a return to classic four on the floor complete with jacking hats, sci-fi blips and bleeps underpinned by a classic steady rising chord progression. When the melodic toy piano type riff kicks in midway through it has an almost eerie quality overplayed over the top of the filtered vocals. It is a really builder of a tune. Did you envisage this as more of a dance floor number when you wrote it? What kind of sound sources where you using on this one?

Four Directions is a homage to House music. It’s got that Detriot-ish lead chord progression, vocals, albeit disembodied, and the scratching, which I’ve always felts appropriate to deep soulful house. And what is a House track without a piano? I'm not sure I ever write music for a dance floor. Surely different vibes would be more suited to dancing but I generally frame my production around a sound rather than a purpose. As far as sounds go, the chord progression is the Korg Miniologue, The building acid line is a Roland TB-03. The synthesized scratching, bassline and toy piano are the Analog 4. The percussion and beats are the TR-8 and Drumbrute. Finally the sample is Ekhart Tolle talking about the nature of addiction, though it’s heavily processed.

Ordinary Life is another deep and steady offering. Really dubby and probably the deepest cut on the E.P. You have put out a few dubby numbers in your time. Compared to your older stuff, how has your sound evolved? Do you find yourself revisiting certain production techniques in the studio? How do you keep your production process feeling fresh?

Regarding my dubby explorations, I guess because Dub Techno is all about the delays and reverb tails, I am always trying to use a different reverb or delay technique to get a more spacious atmosphere. It’s very easy to find one dub technique and stick to it, which was a bad habit I’ve had in the past. Ordinary Life has 3 different chord patterns playing at different times, they each have a common delay and reverb chain, then each channel has a unique effects chain again. I’m using unsynced LFO’s linked to cutoff frequencies and reverb tails to change the patterns over time. I like evolving movement in my tracks and in the past, have relied on a single loop, whereas now I generally use a lot of loops, more sparsely. My older stuff was very linear, I find these days I like messing with trigger probability and layering odd length patterns to give my programs an unexpected/random element.

The name Ordinary Life is there meaning behind that? Would it be safe to say your music transports you to another place and gives you an escape from daily life? Tell me about the feelings you get when you produce?

I called the track Ordinary Life because the original sample I’ve used was Terrence McKenna talking about how his upbringing had been such an ordinary life. Anyone who knows Terence’s work will know it’s far from ordinary. I do use my music as an escape from normal life, both when I make music and listen back to it. I live a pretty normal life, married with kids, in suburbia. I find my music is so far removed from that life, I can’t help but travel somewhere else when I make it. Electronic music and the places it gets played is so far removed from my ordinary life, it’s actually a blessing to be able to have my feet in two worlds, one where the love of a family is so nurturing and one where escapism, freedom and creative expression are the sustenance I need in both worlds. I guess you could say that making music and being creative fuels my ordinary life.

Finally, Primal Space. A really percussive groove with a cheeky swing to it. It has a low end that almost growls at you like an animal. I really like it. And the acid squelches and cinematic string elements really bring you into the environment. Talk us through your process for this one. Are you using the same instruments through the E.P.? Or do you change it up with each track?

That low end growl you mention is the ‘primal’, the strings and pads are the ‘space’ Primal Space is all about the minimalism for me. Sparse elements and minimal beats, the swing and the acid, the atmosphere, this is pretty much was minimal house music means to me, but I wanted a bit of a darker twist so there’s that tribal element too.

Thanks for the interesting questions and of course the release on Analog Cabin, I can’t wait to share the music and the label. It’s a release I have been looking forward to for a long time, so thank you.

A mainstay of Sydney's techno and electro scene for more than twenty years, Drox has earned the respect and love of fans and has carved out an imposing yet super humble etching on the local scene.

Drox’s DJing style can be described as heavily influenced by electro, raw machine music, industrial and bass music in all its many forms. His sound embodies a spontaneous charm that nods to early 90s Detroit machine music, rich IDM sounds, and dystopian sci-fi tones.

His intelligent approach has led to him playing at some of Sydney and Australia's most well-respected clubs/events, both as a headliner and as a support act for international artists such as Hieroglyphic Being, Buzz Kull, Assembler Code and Reptant among others.

He has also received international recognition, being invited to play in East London’s Hobby Horse along with providing mixes for Serotonin Records in New York, Dark Science Electro in Colorado, Hjärngymnastik in Sweden, and Cyber Domain in the UK/Germany.

Other stops on his musical travels have included Melbourne, Brisbane, and a livestream for The Advent’s techno-club.net virtual club.

Drox is an accomplished producer, his tracks have earned praise from Vince Watson, Iron Curtis, DJ Bone and Neville Watson for his productions along with with releases on Datadisk, Natural Expressions, Nightime Drama, Crobot Muzik and his Analog Cabin label among others.

He has been invited to lecture on at the Australian Institute of Music and the Analog Cabin recording studio has been featured in Audio Technology Magazine, Red Bull and the German-language SynMag synthesizer magazine.

Later this year Drox is launching a new vinyl label: Delphic Iris in collaboration with Berlin based 16 Faces, as an outlet for for their productions launching in both Berlin and Sydney.
